August Favorites

August was a busy month for me. I visited friends, drove across the country, and started back up at work and school. During such a busy time, I was happy to have favorite makeup products to start my mornings and favorite books to read before I went to sleep.

I’ve had the Tarte Clay Pot Liner in Black since winter, but I really got into using it this month. I found a fine tip Morphe Brush (from the 18 piece vegan brush set) that I like using with it. It is incredibly smooth and creamy, so I like using it to paint on winged eyeliner. However, I tried using it in my waterline (and that was way less successful).

I was pleasantly surprised by the Maybelline Better Skin Powder. I received this foundation in a promotional package from Influenster, and it knocked my socks off. It’s been really humid in North Carolina, where I’m living. I have normal skin that leans a little toward the oily side, and combined with humidity I don’t really need any “dewy” foundations. The Maybelline Better Skin Powder is ultra-matte and has salicylic acid. It didn’t break my skin out at all (even on the sweatiest of days) and it didn’t break up on my face like a lot of other foundations. As the day went on, the matte finish wore off and my skin appeared dewy (but not oily). I loved how beautiful and natural the Maybelline Better Skin Powder looks. I like using it alone as a foundation, but if I want a super full-coverage look for a special occasion I have used it as a setting powder on top of my MAC Face + Body liquid foundation.

The Physician’s Formula Butter Bronzer has been a staple for me this summer. It smells like summer in a compact, and it gives my face a natural-looking tan. It’s a drugstore product, but it feels luxurious. I use it almost every day. I like that the matte finish makes it appropriate for a soft contour, or for an all-over bronze.

Another bronzer I have been loving is the Chocolate Soleil by Too Faced. My mom gave me a sample size of the bronzer, and I fell in love with it. It is my favorite contouring product ever. I use it to define my cheekbones, but it still looks soft and natural. It would be too dark as an all-over bronzer on my fair skin, but I absolutely love the Chocolate Soleil.

I’ve been totally in love with the Nivea Creme moisturizer, which I wrote about in a blog post last week. It is my favorite moisturizer ever. I’ve used all kinds of body butters and lotions (drugstore, high end, you name it) and this one is my favorite. It feels thick and luxurious, and it has the perfect fresh scent. I like using it right before bedtime.

Reading The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robet Galbraith was the literary highlight of my month. I rushed to the library immediately to buy the sequel, The Silkworm. I reviewed The Cuckoo’s Calling earlier this month because I loved it so much. I’ve never fallen so hard for a detective novel. I appreciate a good mystery here and there, but Galbraith’s compelling characters and writing style made this novel exceptional. As an added bonus, the mystery is about a supermodel’s mysterious death, so the fashion industry (swoon) plays a huge role in the plot. The Silkworm is all about a writer, so it deals with the publishing industry (less glamorous but also exciting). The Silkworm is much grittier than The Cuckoo’s Calling, but Galbraith (AKA JK Rowling) does an excellent job of expanding and developing his already wonderful characters, and the sequel is just as engaging as the original.

Those are all of my August Favorites.  I hope you had a great month, and that you are looking forward to fall as much as I am!
