Kat Von D Shade + Light Contour Kit (Review)

Kat Von D Shade + Light Contour Kit (Review)

It took me a while to get into powder contouring. I stand by the statement that cream contouring is a little easier, because there’s something about a cream contour that blends into a natural-looking finish more easily. However, cream products can feel heavy on the skin, especially in hot summer months when makeup tends to melt off the face. The Kat Von D Shade + Light Contour kit is a classic Sephora purchase, popular among the blogger-types and the day-to-day makeup fanatics.

I don’t think I’ve ever used a powder formula quite like Kat Von D’s. The powder is buttery and smooth, but simultaneously very pigmented. These powders blend into the skin, and they’re somehow matte without looking or feeling powdery at all. The only problem with this kit is that I can’t use all of the shades on my face, but I use them on my eyelids instead of eyeshadow. They create a beautiful, natural look. I could never use the peach shade, “lucid” under my eyes, but as an eyeshadow it makes my eyes look bright and awake. Plus, the formula is so creamy and bendable, it’s a dream to work with. I use all of the contouring shades, but the middle shade “Shadowplay” is my favorite.

This kit has a great mix of warm tones and cool tones, which makes it versatile for both bronzing and contouring. The formula is super pigmented, so it can help to tap the excess off the brush before applying the powder. I like using a fluffy brush with the warm-toned shades to bronze my skin, or a more precise brush with the cool toned shades to contour. I mix the contouring shades all the time.

I got the refillable contour kit, which I prefer because I use some shades more than others. “Levitation” is a beautiful powder that melts into the skin under my eyes, but all of the other powders are wrong for my skin tone. Even though I like using them as eyeshadows, I’m sure I’ll go through “Levitation” long before “Lyric” or “Lucid.”

Even though this palette is expensive, I would say it’s worth the money. You get a luxurious palette, with super-high quality powders. Plus, the powders themselves last a long time. I use this palette regularly and I’m not even close to hitting pan. The fact that these powders make such great eyeshadows only adds to their versatility. Whether you’re a makeup whiz or just a beginner, you could definitely find a use for this palette.
