Stila Glitterati Lip Top Coat (Review)

The phrase “lip topper” just might have been invented in 2016, if not in 2017. Before that, anything I put on top of my lipstick was just lip gloss. But with makeup marketing, beauty influencers, and the internet, the advent of new (if slightly gimmicky) beauty products is inevitable. And so the “lip topper” was born.

Now, I haven’t tried many of these so-called lip toppers, (though Jouer’s Skinny Dip Lip Topper was the first I heard about). However, I’ve been playing around with Stila’s Glitterati Lip Top Coat for over a year. This glittery lip product is unusual, because it dries down. It isn’t a gloss, which is what I assume most lip toppers are (just extra-sparkly, cleverly marketed glosses). However, the Stila Glitterati Lip Top Coat is like glitter eyeshadow, but for your mouth. You shake the tube, then apply a layer or two of glitter, which dries down. It sounds like it could be chunky or uncomfortable, but it really isn’t. It gives lips sparkle and dimension (emphasis on sparkle) with zero stickiness. Of course, the matte finish means it’s a little drying, but for many people that isn’t a problem.

I don’t like the Stila Glitterati Lip Top Coat when I wear it over normal lipstick. I would only recommend using it over a liquid lipstick, preferably a matte one. Experiment with different formulas; however, in my experience, it gets a little funky when it’s on a creamy base. The Stila Lip Top Coat wears longer than a typical gloss, which will come off on any of your glasses. The Lip Top Coat is transfer-proof, but of course will wear off if you eat a lot of oily food. However, it’s a pretty good bet for a night on the town, and it’s generally comfortable, even if it isn’t as moisturizing as a gloss.

This is a unique product, and because it’s a bold look I don’t go for it every day. I have the color “Transcend,” which is silvery-pink glitter. The base is clear, so you really just see the sparkly finish on top of whatever lipstick you pair it with. I wore it on a red lip around the holidays, but I tend to prefer it on top of a nude lipstick.
