NYX is one of the trendiest drugstore brands, with some great products. While I can’t advocate for the whole line, there are a few gems (the lip liners are amazing). I tried the NYX Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator in the shade Sunbeam, which didn’t really impress […]

Stick eyeshadows are a like cream eyeshadows, but better. Most cream eyeshadows come in a pot, but instead these stick shadows come in a handy pen-like container. The eyeshadows themselves lie between an eyeliner and a cream shadow: the packaging makes them more like an eyeliner with a fat tip, but the formulas are creamy and blendable like a shadow. I like to apply them straight from the tube, then blend with my fingers. I tried out several different stick eyeshadows, which are great for a hot August day (or any time of the year) to see which would win the battle of the stick eyeshadows.
Kiko Cosmetics Long Lasting Stick Eyeshadow in Violet: This color is vibrant purple and fabulous. I loved swiping it on my eyelids and blending with my fingers for an easy but colorful look. However, the “long lasting” claim is a falsehood. This eyeshadow never wore for more than a few hours on my lids, and it creased horribly (even when I primed my eyelids before using the eyeshadows). Even though this product is more affordable than others on this list, I would rather save my money and buy something nicer because this wasn’t an effective product.
Make Up Forever Aqua-Matic Waterproof Glide-on Shadow in ME50: This beautiful eyeshadow glides on and stays on. This was one of the best stick eyeshadows I tried, because of its staying power and slight shimmer. I like the shade well enough, but I wish it was more of a warm-toned brown rather than a cool-toned brown. I also had a good chunk of this eyeshadow break off while I was applying it, which was disappointing. Overall, though, this is a really nice product.
Sephora Collection Shadow & Liner in Secret Boudoir: Honestly, I don’t like this as an eyeshadow because it creases. However, I use this neutral hue all the time because it is a great liner for the lower waterline. I like using this shadow stick to clean up my brow area. The pencil-tip makes it easy to sculpt and highlight my brow bone. Even though this eyeshadow didn’t work the way I expected it to, I love using it for entirely different reasons.
Chanel Stylo Eyeshadow in Beige Doré: This luxurious shadow was a splurge for me while I was visiting France, but it is less expensive in France than here in the U.S.A. This eyeshadow is creamy and moisturizing. It blends over the lid luxuriously, then settles in and stays put all day. It doesn’t crease at all, and the Beige Doré hue gives the perfect hint of gold shimmer without any chunky glitter. The slanted applicator makes it easy to apply without breaking off the tip of the eyeshadow. This is one of my favorite eyeshadows (definitely my favorite stick eyeshadow) and I use it all the time. The only major disappointment for me is that Chanel does test on animals, and isn’t a particularly sustainable company in other respects (as far as my research shows).
NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Sparkle Nude: Though the color wasn’t for me (it’s glittery and I’m not much of a glitter girl) the formula is great. It doesn’t crease, and it is long lasting. Because I didn’t like the color so much, I handed it off to my sister, who loves it. I also love using the same product in the color Black Bean to line my waterline.
The Chanel Stylo Eyeshadow is the winner, but the Makeup Forever Aqua-Matic was a close runner-up. Both of these products are excellent, but the Chanel applicator and the color selection are what makes the Chanel version slightly superior (in my opinion). For a more affordable, drugstore option, the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils are great products.
